Thirunavaya Tourism

Thirunavaya is the abode of the gods and it impresses one with its breathtaking natural beauty. On the banks of Nila or Bharatapuzha, a 203 km long river, the second longest after Periyar,is a famous holiday location in SouthIndia .Mamankam,Bharathappuzha(Nila), Nilapadu thara, navakumunda temple, lotus cultivation are the main tourist attraction.

  • THE HISTORY OF MAMANKAM

According to Brahmin tradition, after the creation of Kerala, Parasurama planted sixty-four joint Brahmin families and gave them law and order to govern themselves. But the Brahmins invited rulers called 'Perumals', from outside to rule them. Each ruler was appointed for a period of 12 years. At the end of the 12th year, a new king was selected following a grant cultural event what came to be known as Mamankam.

Mamankam was held once in every 12 years at Thirunavaya, on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha. Celebrated for 28 days, it was also an enormous trade fair in which traders from various places came to Thirunavaya. At the grand finale, which was a great assembly of rulers, the new king of Kerala was selected. Two of the earlier kings who are known to have abdicated their thrones following this route were Kulasekara Alwar (8th century) and Cheraman Perumal (A.D 825).

With the rule of the Perumals coming to an end, the right to conduct Mamankam vested with the ruler of Valluvanad. As mentioned earlier, Mamankam was also an enormous trade fair and thus of high economical advantage for its controllers. This triggered bitter strife among the rulers over the right to conduct and control Mamankam. Later the Zamorin of Kozhikode, took this right by force and this resulted in dispute and bloodshed between these two kings. With this incident the basic purpose of Mamankam ( selection of new king ) changed and it became a game of revenge between the two rulers, in which the king of Valluvanad used to send Chavers (suicide warriors) to fight until death and recapture the right from the Zamorins. A Mamankam was held at the end of each 12th year. During this time, the Zamorin would stand waiting at the Nilapadu Thara surrounded by a huge contingent of soldiers and a battle was fought between the chavers and the soldiers of the Zamorin. The last Mamankam to be held at Thirunavaya was in 1755.

Events like Mamankam were unique to Kerala. Thirunavaya on the banks of Bharathapuzha is now an area of historical importance and the Nilapadu Thara is now under the control and protection of the Archeological Dept. It is also an important tourist spot.

  • BHARATHA PUZHA(NILA)
Thirunavaya is located along the banks of Bharatha puzha (also known as Nila),the second largest river of kerala with a length of 209 kilometres. The word "Nila" indicates the culture more than just a river. Nila has groomed the culture and life of south Malabar part of Kerala. We see the name "Peraar" indicating the same river in ancient scripts and documents.

A Homage To My Grandpa

Chittakath Pottammel Kunchi Koyamu Haji
was born July 1st 1929 at Edakkulam,Malappuram district. His father though not succesfull was a small buisness man whose death when he was just six made his life extremely hard. And fate had made his mother bold enough look after him and his only sister Mrs.Immu.
His father left a huge debt over him and his mother to his uncles.According to the family settlement they decided to take over his fathers land instead of debt(including intrest) and send her mpother her home. But his mother didn't agree the settlement and assured them that she would repay the debt by any possible mean.
Though he was not bad at studies, the situation forced him to stop studies by IVth STD.As the financial situation of muslim community in general and his family in particular was so poor he turned to whatever buisness(I dont know whether i can call it buisness or not) and work he can.And when I approached his collegues to learn about his buisness i was really surprised to know that there wasn'nt any field of buisness without his touch.

Buisness And Growth
  • Talking about his buisness,it started from collection of sacks from diffrent shops of entire market and reselling them together at places like coimbatore and kozhikode.
  • Then he started colllecting rice from farmers and reselling them.
  • It was follwed by a small grocery shop at edakkulam.
  • Then he turned to lotus and beetle cultivation
  • At that time the company made cigrettes were used very rarely and the local made "beedies" (we call it so) were in great demand.his role was crucial in developing edakkulam as centre of beedi buisness
  • Soon he got license for first four ration shops in Thirunavaya panchayath.(run under kerla civil supplies corperation)
  • Similarly he got dealership of MALABAR CEMENTS(a govt. undertaking company)
Medical Field
  • Initially he started with the ayurvedic and Unani medicines of AUSHADI and AL-SHIFA.Soon he turned to English medicines by establishing C.P MEDICALS and Later C.P DRUG HOUSE.He also attached a small clinic with a single doctor to the medical shop
  • Under his guidence C.P GROUP co-partnered by his two sons started their first pharmacy cum clinic at Ghiyathi, a place nearer to Abu-dhabi.Right now C.P GROUP owns five pharmacies and two clinics in middle-east.Under his leadership C.P GROUP made its debut to kerala by becoming the calicut dealer of GODREJ PRODUCTS.And now C.P GROUP IS THE distributor of SHELL LUBRICANTS from Ernankulam to Kasargod,Calicut dealer of MICRO TECHNOLOGIES and started  BIN10 IT SOLUTIONS earlier this year.
Relegious And Social Life

  • He served as Secretary of EDAKKULAM MAHALL JAMA-ATH  COMMITEE for more than thirty years and actively involved  in solving the family desputes and property related issues in the MAHALL.His words were supreme over others and was the final decision.

  • He along with his friend Late Mr.Ahmed Kutty Haji travelled to Malaysia to raise fund for the reconstruction of  EDAKKULAM VALIYA PALLI(MOSQUE) where he used his relations effectively to collect donations.Later the EDAKKULAM TOWN JUMA MASJID was also reconstructed under his managment.
  • He was one of the founder member of MARKAZU THARBIYATHUL ISLAMIYA VALANCHERY.He also served as the executive committee member of BHAFAKHY YATHEEM KHANA VALAVANNOOR,DARUL HUDA ACADEMY CHEMMAD,P.M.S.A YATHEEM KHANA KATILANGADI.
  • Due to his relegious and social activness,he was selected to executive committee of MAUNAM(MAUNATHUL ISLAM SABHA) PONNANI.The registered institution to deal with reverts to islam and their rehabilitation.
Political Life

As islam doesn't separate politics and relegion ,Muslim community keep harmonian relation with politics. My grandpa was not an exeption. He started his political career by joining MUSLIM LEAGUE and was one of the starting member of Tirur mandalam. His role in establishing the base for muslim league at thirunavaya and near by areas is inquestionable and kept close relation with early muslim league leaders like PANAKKAD THANGAL FAMILY,C.H,SAIT SAHEB,BANATHWALA,BAFHAKY THANGAL e.t.c.He was the member of MUSLIM LEAGUE STATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.
Later in BABARI issue he moved out of muslim league along with SAIT SAHEB  to form INDIAN NATIONAL LEAGUE(INL).
He also served as
  • INL Malappuram district vise president
  • Muslim League Kuttipuram mandalam  general secretary
  • Tirur block vikasana samiti member
  • Thirunavaya service cooperative bank president
My Personal Observation
"I personally feel like what he did is the limit of an orphan without much formal education can do(though he didn't score many a hundreds like me in maths,he was always ahead of me) and i am really proud to be his grand son."
